We Love Sand Key

Preserving Our Neighborhood, Building Our Community

 Sand Key Community Organization (SKCO)

 Our History

Sand Key Community Organization (SKCO) is the outgrowth of two grass roots committees that formed on the Island of Sand Key early in 2008.  Both committees were, and are presently, lead by a group of volunteers who dedicate their time, talent and treasure to preserve the residential nature of the community.

The first of these committees was Save our Shoppes (SOS) which responded to the threat to rezone the property where the only commercial retail shopping on the island is located, Shoppes on Sand Key to allow the construction of a ten story hotel. The second committee was Save Our Neighborhood (SON)  which formed to oppose the construction of a hotel on the south end of the island where the Cabana Club Restaurant is located. In addition, both SOS and SON continue to vigilantly oppose the efforts by the City of Clearwater City Council to promote unreasonable expansion and construction of hotels on the Island. The outcry of support, passion and cohesiveness of the community towards the efforts of SOS and SON was and remains unprecedented.

The purpose and vision of SOS and SON is now expanding beyond the initiatives for which they were initially formed. The residents of the island have enthusiastically expressed the desire to not only preserve the neighborhood, but to build community. Sand Key Community Organization (SKCO) is committed to respond to that desire and provide the venue for it to occur.

MISSION STATEMENT

"The purpose of the Sand Key Community Organization (SKCO) is to encourage the preservation of the neighborhood on the island of Sand Key and to build community spirit by fostering an attitude of participation and communication among all its neighbors."

We welcome you to your new website which will serve as our primary means of communication and information. You will find events and activities happening on the island, updates on initiatives impacting the island, an opportunity for you to provide feedback on issues and, most importantly, a way to continue to foster the desire to build upon the residential community “conversation."
